It’s Bakoven.
Most Cape Tonians may never even have heard of it. It’s a
“blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” part of the Camps Bay side of the world, and Baked
is just as inconspicuous as the area in which is finds itself. Owner and face
of the new found gem, Zahir Mohamed, is incredibly passionate and excited about
the prospects of what lies ahead. Having trained in both Italy and France as a
baker and chef, Zahir’s breads, croissants and other oven created delicacies
are superb. The opening of this beautiful space fills a gaping hole in the
market for the population of Camps. The freshly baked goodies and a laid back,
minimalist interior, combines to create a phenomenal, chic and effortlessly
comforting experience. “I’m trying to create a lifestyle, not just a brand”
says Zahir.
The beans used
for the coffee are humbly called “The Baked Blend” and roasted by Terbodore,
but Zahir will be introducing his own roaster into the bistro so as to be able
to do everything on site. The flat white was superb, and almost decadent. A
fine micro foam coupled with delicious, lively fruit flavours, makes for an
altogether refreshing experience. The coffee is sold by the bag to take home at
the bistro itself, and it comes either pre ground, or still as the hole bean.
Baked Bistro is
a pit stop everyone should make. It’s the place you want to laze about at on a
sunny, Saturday morning, marinating in coffee bliss and brekkie heaven.
As a side note,
once you’ve drunk the coffee, you have to have a go at the damn-fine, homemade
lemonade. Wow!
